...it takes a good portion of self-confidence to present orchestra members
as soloists on the same program with a pianist of such rank. The
Mozarteum Orchestra can afford to do this at the moment, thus creating
an evening of inspired adventure in concertizing. The solo clarinettist,
Ferdinand Steiner, seized the opportunity to show his musically vivacious,
even impish side. Witty and rousing, he raced along the scales with
impressive articulation, always finding his way back to a calm, controlled
cantilena in the end.
